Love and War

Series: Special Topic Topic: Spiritual warfare Passage: Galatians 5:16–24

There are two themes that describe every human heart: Love and War. The unbeliever loves his sin and wages a war against God that is utterly futile, and the believer loves the Lord and wages a war against the flesh that is eternally fruitful. But sometimes the difficulty of this war can catch the Christian by surprise. Though we have been made spiritually alive in Christ, are indwelt by the Spirit of God and have the Scriptures to guide us, still our flesh is unredeemed. Until we see Christ face to face, our flesh only seeks its own gratification, and it presses hard against our new nature. The passions and emotions that accompany these fleshly desires can seem powerful. Anger can deceive us into believing we have a right to wrath, and fear can delude us into avoiding our problems entirely. How can we win this war? Walk by faith, not your feelings. Remember that God is our strength and has freed us from sin’s power, and then work to crucify ungodly affections, and cultivate a love for the holy.
